What is the best way to get to Basecamp from the airport

Car: Private car is the easiest way to get from the airport to Basecamp. We can arrange for our driver to pick you up from the airport.  Drop off and pickups will cost 85 euros (subject to change depending on petrol prices.)

Bus: If you decide to take the bus, you can take the highway bus to Matara or Galle. The highway bus only goes a few times a day, you can check the schedule online but is not always reliable. From Matara or Galle to Basecamp you can take a local bus or tuk tuk. This will take around 4 hours in total. If there is no highway bus at the airport you can take the bus to Colombo first and try to get on the highway bus from there. These busses go every hour. It will take you an hour longer than the first option. The last bus option is to take a local (express) bus all the way but since that takes about 6 hours we don’t recommend to do so.

Train: You have to take a bus/tuk tuk/taxi to Colombo Fort first. The train goes 4 or 5 times a day so please check the schedule before online (check it at the government website, that’s reliable www.railway.gov.lk). From Weligama train station you can take a tuk tuk to Basecamp. If your bus and train are connecting it will take around 4,5 hours.

How is the weather throughout the year?

Year round it is around 30 degrees and very sunny. However, the forecast often says otherwise because rain showers come and go quickly.  Make sure to bring enough sunscreen and beachwear.  There’s also a few misconceptions attached to the monsoon from April until October. The most chance of heavy rain showers is in May, beginning of June and November when the monsoon changes. Otherwise it's sunny and there are a few random rain showers during the day helping you cool down in the hot tropical climate.

It is always difficult to predict the weather on a tropical island but this is the closest we get, and we can recommend traveling to the South Coast all year round.
